Course Outline

UCLA Extension and Get Safe collaboratively offer this course, which seeks to provide law enforcement with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform their job safely when dealing with tense or escalating situations. This course will provide de-escalation skills to decrease the need for deadly force including using self-control and stress management techniques, effective listening and communication skills, keen scene assessments, and principled policing strategies. Students will be better equipped to navigate the use of force continuum, including deadly force, within the confines of California law. The course will address recent changes in Use of Force mandates established by AB 392 and SB 230. Peace officers must understand how the principles of de-escalation and increasing time, when available, can provide effective tools during contacts with the public and result in improved decision-making, reduction in situational intensity, and outcomes with greater voluntary compliance.
