The US Department of Education requires colleges and universities to disclose certain information for any financial aid eligible program that, “prepares students for gainful employment in a recognized occupation”. This information includes program costs; occupations that the program prepares students to enter; occupational profiles; on time completion rate; and for the most recent award year: the number of students who have completed the program, the number of students who complete the program within the estimated duration, the job placement rate, and the median Title IV and private loan debt incurred by those who complete the program. This, as well as other information, is listed below.
This program is designed to prepare students who already have a BA and who seek additional language study in Greek and Latin for admission to graduate programs in Classics and related fields. Students who meet the program's entrance requirements can expect to complete the program, earning the certificate at the end of one academic year of study. Faculty advisor Dr. Amy Richlin will assist students in planning their course of study. The curriculum includes a post-baccalaureate seminar taught by a UCLA faculty member which is exclusive to students in the program. This seminar culminates in the completion of a research paper for the purpose of submission as a writing sample for graduate school applications. Graduates of this program have been admitted to graduate study in Classics, Philosophy, History, Archaeology, Religion, and Near Eastern Languages and Cultures at such institutions as UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, University of Chicago, Harvard University, University of Michigan, New York University, University of Pittsburgh, USC, Vanderbilt University, and Yale University.
- Minimum requirement for completion of the program is 36 units of course work comprising the following: The Classics Post-Baccalaureate Seminar (taken Pass/No Pass), three Greek and three Latin courses beyond the first year of study, and additional courses in Classics, Ancient History, or other disciplines directly related to the program. More advanced students may take graduate seminars in the fields of Classics, Greek, and Latin only with the approval of the Faculty Advisor and instructor of the seminar. Students typically complete the program in three quarters, however students may also opt to extend the program over an additional year.
- Students who wish to earn a certificate in only one language (Latin or Greek) must complete six courses in that language beyond the first year of study.
- 2018-19 Application Deadline: March 1, 2018; applications will be accepted after this deadline until the program is full.
