Course Description

Students learn the elements of on-camera journalism, concentrating on news gathering and how to cover an on-the-spot news story with a camera crew. The course examines the particular impact of artificial intelligence on the practices and profession of televised journalism. Other topics include live interviewing techniques; effective news gathering methods; practice on how to write in clear broadcast style to connect the details of a story with the pictures--especially under deadline pressures; and the mechanics, timing and flow of current broadcast formats, both for short news stories and “magazine-style” programming. Instruction includes specifics of television production and on-camera technique, including shooting a news story using a video camera and showing how news stories fit into a newscast. Career opportunities and the variety of methods used to produce a television newscast, both in theory and in practice, also are discussed.
