Course Description

This course introduces students to the process of developing an estate plan, including federal estate and gift taxation, techniques that reduce the size of a gross estate, wills, intestacy, probate, and trusts. The in-depth curriculum, which includes the use of textbooks and study guides, provides a client-centered, problem-solving methodology that includes case studies, homework assignments, application projects, and group study. The major topics covered are: -+ Estate Planning Process and Goals -+ Methods of Estate Transfer at Death -+ The Federal Estate Tax -+ The Federal Gift Tax -+ Estate Planning Issues Related to Generation-Skipping Transfer Tax and Income Tax -+ Methods of Estate Transfer During Life -+ Estate Liquidity and Postmortem Actions -+ Estate Planning for Special Situations: Incapacity, Family Arrangements and Selecting Fiduciaries
